"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is the first book in the Millennium Trilogy by Steig Larsson. The book is 841 pages in length.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (TGwtDT) is a mystery thriller involving sadism and misogynism. Two unlikely protagonists, journalist Mikael Blomkvist and researcher/computer-hacker Lisbeth Salander are thrown together in quest to solve a missing-persons enigma that goes back well over a quarter century.
Some of the findings 'missed' by previous investigators (given the amount of time, effort and resources that was made available to them) made them look incompetent. Our heroes seemed have an uncanny knack for finding that all important missed clue. This being accomplished through diligent digging and also from Salander's computer skills; skills that border on the miraculous (or maybe unbelievable).

Comment:
Despite its length, TGwtDT is a fast, easy read, but that is not to say it's particularly well written; it has its flaws that are just not entirely related in the text being translated from Swedish to English. The writing, at times, seemed quite amateurish.
There may have been a little too much of the erotic mixed in with the more serious who-done-it component, with the former taking away from the intriguing mystery associated with the latter.
In spots, the book seemed to have excessive detail, that while within the context of the story, had little to do with the real plot or its outcome. These areas became easy to recognize and just as easy to skim through. They really only served to lengthen an already long book.
Conclusion:
Despite my concerns with some of the writing quality and a few of the plot details, I enjoyed this disturbing thriller; it was, truly hard to put down.
This is however, not a tale for the faint of heart; I suspect there are some readers that may have difficulty with certain passages in this book. Overall...2 maybe 2 1/2 Stars.

From the land of the dragon boats comes this splendid book about complicated life in modern Stockholm, among other places in Sweden. For a North American with only a passing knowledge of the country it is a great introduction to Sweden and now I want to go there as a tourist.
Which has nothing to do with the book except for the way the scenery and background sets the actions up.
I really like a book where there are no dumb crooks, only sharp intellects in conflict and common assumptions about morals, morality, money, inheritance, corporate dynasties, news publishing, ministerial level government, and high level police and social services in the Swedish State come under examination.
Nothing is what it seems to be as the book unfolds, and presumptions are challenged all the way through.
I don't want to give away any plot, but do want to urge you to please give the book a chance for a first few pages.
Any crimes that are complicated and long term take a certain amount of space to get rolling.
The book seems long, but there are several places where it is possible to stop for a while and think about what has just happened, then try to anticipate what will happen next.
What happens is always logical, but not always expected.
And roll this one does when the denouement starts!
Reserve some time for the last bit, because you will not want to stop.

Unfortunately, I wasn't wowed by this book in the way that I hoped I would be. I had heard many raving reviews of it, and decided it *must* be a page-turner, so I took it with me when I sat on jury duty for one week. I had lots of people tell me they read it in days. I wasn't quite as enamoured with it, and ended up taking about 4 weeks to finish it.
Mind you, the story is very interesting, and I did find myself trying to "solve" it as I went along. Maybe it was just a result of over-hype, but I just didn't see what all the excitement is about. I'm not in a rush to read the next two.... but I am sure I will!

I picked this book up because everyone has given it such great reviews. I had a really difficult time getting through the first bit.. i found it took too much concentration and was really quite boring! Parts of the middle were interesting but I never once felt the need to keep on reading. I didnt even finish the last 50 pages.. i felt that i had already wasted enough time and to be honest im not even curious about what happened! I do think that it will make a better movie than book. Glad that i didnt buy all 3 at once as i had originally planned!
