| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.ca Up in the Air transforms some painful subjects into smart, sly comedy--with just enough of the pain underneath to give it some weight. Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) spends most of his days traveling around the country and firing people; he's hired by bosses who don't have the nerve to do their layoffs themselves. His life of constant flight suits him--he wants no attachments. But two things suddenly threaten his vacuum-sealed world: his company decides to do layoffs via video conference so they don't have to pay for travel, and Bingham meets a woman named Alex (Vera Farmiga, The Departed), who seems to be the female version of him… and of course, he starts to fall in love. Writer-director Jason Reitman is building a career from funny but thoughtful movies about compromised people--a pregnant teen in Juno, a cigarette-company executive in Thank You for Smoking. George Clooney has a gift for playing smart men who aren't quite as smart as they think they are (Michael Clayton, Out of Sight). The combination is perfect: Bingham is charming and sympathetic but clearly missing something, and Up in the Air captures that absence with clarity and compassion. The outstanding supporting cast includes Anna Kendrick (Rocket Science), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Danny McBride (Pineapple Express), Melanie Lynskey (Away We Go), and others, each small part pitched exactly right. --Bret Fetzer

| Customer Reviews: Excellent Drama June 1, 2010 Eddie Nguyen (Toronto Canada) Up in the Air
'Up In The Air' reminded me a great deal of 'About Schmidt' - with that pure midwest flavor. This is George Clooney at his best in drama. This pic was advertized as comedy but is far from it. This story was marvelous rich drama. I was quite surprised at the depth & dramatic appeal. I would recommend this flick to anyone who loves a real story without Hollywood mucking it up with 'happy ever after'.
NOT UP April 10, 2010 E. Fallis (Calgary, Alberta Canada) A good morale to this movie and it was interesting once. Would not be on my list of favorites to watch again.
"Your position is no longer available." April 9, 2010 Kona (Emerald City) Ryan Bingham's (George Clooney) job is to fly around the country and fire people for companies who don't want to do it themselves. He likes his work and his life, which is uncomplicated by relationships or domestic demands. On one stop-over, however, Ryan meets a female version of himself (Vera Farmiga) and sparks fly.
The success of this movie must be due entirely to the charm of its leading man, because it is in no other way unusual or special. Clooney is quite likable playing his usual confident smooth-talker and Farmiga is good in an undemanding role but not worthy of an Oscar nomination, in my opinion. The plot is pleasant enough, but hardly memorable, so I don't understand all the excitement about it. It was just okay for me. 3.5 stars.
Social Commentary - Much Food For Thought March 17, 2010 Luc_kie (Ontario)
Saw UP IN THE AIR at the cinema and it was definitely worthwhile. The whole film is a social commentary of our current western world, where people are downsized, struggle with relationship/communication problems, and all while embracing new technologies. What I loved most about this film is the degree of "human-ness" that those problems brought out in the various characters- from Clooney all the way to the minor actors who were downsized. The atmosphere had a texture of a documentary (to say it felt real) and this made the story very rich.
breezy little film (3.5/5) March 15, 2010 falcon (canada) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
this was in interesting little film.it's basically about a guy(George Clooney)whose job requires him to live out of a suitcase for at least two thirds of the year.he flies around the country to different companies and tells people they been terminated from their positions with their company.basically he feels most at home on the road,so to speak.there's more to the story than that, but you'll have to watch the film if you want you know more.i thought the dialogue was clever and witty and the chemistry between the actors was good.and Clooney creates a sympathetic character.Jason Bateman really impressed with a small role.overall,i felt this was a breezy little film, with some serious moments.for me,Up in the Air is a 3.5/5
