Catchy and effective... but predictable August 24, 2010

You always know what to expect when you're buying a Kylie Minogue album: energetic and catchy dance-pop songs featuring sexy lyrics, taken care of by the top producers of the day. And although there have been a few exceptions to this rule ("Impossible Princess" comes to mind), her new album "Aphrodite" sticks closely to the formula that made her an international superstar. Too closely, perhaps; to quote the line of one of her old songs, you get the feeling that you've heard it all before. Don't get me wrong, there are many highlights and potential hit singles: the debut single "All the lovers", "Can't beat the feeling" (which is reminiscent of the early 80s material from Prince), the stomping title track, the Abba-influenced "Closer" and the instantly hummable pop of "Get out of my way", "Put your hands up" and "Better than today". As for the rest of the songs, they range from okay ("Everything is beautiful", "Illusion") to irritatingly generic ("Looking for an angel", "Cupid boy"). Even the collaboration with Scissor Sisters' Jake Shear ("Too much") fails to deliver the expected glitter, a strange thing given the uplifting music these two artists usually produce. What remains is an enjoyable collection of twelve entertaining songs, likely to appeal to her longtime fans but unlikely to be remembered as highlights in her lengthy career. A little experimentation, combined with her unfaltering mass appeal, might produce better results the next time around. Then again, not everybody has to reinvent the wheel; Kylie can at least claim to have mastered the formula presented on "Aphrodite".

Kylie's "Aphrodite" is catchy, well produced synth-pop, but the album does kind of drag on at mid point, since there is little variation in style, tempo or theme. Kylie does posses a sexy charm throughout, but there is nothing here that seems progressive or cutting edge. Stuart Price employs many of the same sonic magic tricks used on Madonna's "Confessions On A Dance Floor", but with less dramatic effect. First single, "All The Lovers" is the high point, and everything else is professionally executed, but somehow rings a tad hollow at the same time. Oddly enough, the Japanese only bonus track "Heartstrings" is a strong contribution, but is not included on the North American track listing.
