Upgrade to Windows 7

All editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista qualify you to upgrade.

1. Choose your edition of Windows 7
Explore key features and choose the edition that's best for you. Be sure to check the expanded list of extended features in Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. System requirements vary for each edition of Windows 7 because some features might require special hardware.

2. See if your PC has what it takes to run Windows 7
In general, if your PC can run Windows Vista it can run Windows 7. To make sure, download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to do a quick check. If you want certain features, such as HomeGroup or Windows Media Center, check to see if your PC has the hardware that's needed.

3. Check which operating system your PC is currently running
How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system.

  • Windows Vista
The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.

  • Windows XP (or any other operating system)
We recommend that you experience Windows 7 on a new PC. While we don't recommend it, you can opt to upgrade your current PC from Windows XP or another operating system to Windows 7. We recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider. You'll need to back up your current files and settings, perform a custom (clean) installation, and then reinstall your files, settings, and programs.

4 out of 5 stars Beats Vista   June 9, 2010
Sandy Robinson (Toronto)
Glad I upgraded,so far so good. Was having too many problems with Vista missing files etc.Has many good useful features and appears to be much more stable.

5 out of 5 stars Upgrade now! (unless...)   April 16, 2010

Windows 7 is in every way "worth it", so go ahead and make the upgrade (from XP and Vista)

Buy it?: Yes.

UNLESS, you like to record with a microphone. There's something wrong with W7 which makes it near impossible (or at least quite unpleasant) to do what you could do with XP: Plug a microphone in, record with playback IN SYNC WITH THE RECORDING.

My solution: Restart. Boot in XP. Do your thing. Restart. Boot in W7.

2 out of 5 stars Beware - Disappointed by Backward Steps   February 27, 2010

I use Windows Media Center (WMC) to record and play Digital HD television on my PC. Note that under Windows 7 WMC does not support the reception of digital tv (ATSC) in Canada. Microsoft simply says that not all features are supported in all countries. No further explanation. This means that under standard installation in Canada, even if you have the hardware, WMC will not receive any digital tv signals. Nor will WMC download any digital programming guide information. There is a hack available on the internet to overcome these limitations but this requires extra steps and is certainly not supported by Microsoft.

Also if you previously used Movie Maker be aware that under Windows 7, the Movie Maker that is part of the Live package is a completely new program that has fewer features. Contrary to the expected norm that each new version of a program has a progression of new features, Live Movie Maker has LESS features. In particular, the time line has been dropped.

I sure hope Windows 7 proves to be more stable and secure than Vista because so far, see-thru window frames hardly make the investment worth the trouble.

4 out of 5 stars Great OS, worth it.   January 30, 2010
M. Reid
both 32bit and 64bit versions come on the install disc.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit. It is a good OS. I used every version of Windows to date. XP is preobably my fav, but I thouroughly think that Windows 7 is almost as good. I just wish it was a bit leaner.

I upgraded from Vista 64bit(did a clean install) and Windows 7 is much better. It runs faster than Vista for me on the identicle machine. I didn't dislike Vista, but it was a pig on my PC (slow). 7 is much better. I've had it sicne release day, and I used the beta for months before. So far I havn't had it crash once, and havn't had any issues with drivers. Vista I had some driver issue, but no crash.

Only downside, some of my games don't work, seems to be an issue with Starforce copy protection not working with 64bit windows. Trying some worarounds for that...

I would recommend it to people.

3 out of 5 stars Likes to loop once in a while!   January 23, 2010
Ed Ogrodnick
Sometimes the little blue circle likes to go round and round and round when we want to go online-- we go to task manager and it is empty-- so we do a restart and things are fine again for a while. Thanks Ed O.
