The plotline may sound familiar: Two mismatched cops are assigned as reluctant partners to solve a crime. Culturally they are complete opposites, and they quickly realize they can't stand each other. One (Jackie Chan) believes in doing things by the book. He is a man with integrity and nerves of steel. The other (Chris Tucker) is an amiable rebel who can't stand authority figures. He's a man who has to do everything on his own, much to the displeasure of his superior officer, who in turn thinks this cop is a loose cannon but tolerates him because he gets the job done. Directed by Brett Ratner, Rush Hour doesn't break any new ground in terms of story, stunts, or direction. It rehashes just about every "buddy" movie ever made--in fact, it makes films such as Tango and Cash seem utterly original and clever by comparison. So, why did this uninspired movie make over $120 million at the box office? Was the whole world suffering from temporary insanity? Hardly. The explanation for the success of Rush Hour is quite simple: chemistry. The casting of veteran action maestro Jackie Chan with the charming and often hilarious Chris Tucker was a serendipitous stroke of genius. Fans of Jackie Chan may be slightly disappointed by the lack of action set pieces that emphasize his kung-fu craft. On the other hand, those who know the history of this seasoned Hong Kong actor will be able to appreciate that Rush Hour was the mainstream breakthrough that Chan had deserved for years. Coupled with the charismatic scene-stealer Tucker, Chan gets to flex his comic muscles to great effect. From their first scenes together to the trademark Chan outtakes during the end credits, their ability to play off of one another is a joy to behold, and this mischievous interaction is what saves the film from slipping into the depths of pitiful mediocrity. --Jeremy Storey

5 out of 5 stars best of the trilogy   October 5, 2008

This is a great movie the 2 leads have great chemistry and they action is wicked. The fights that jackie does are the best in the series its pretty funny too.

4 out of 5 stars Chan and Tucker make a great odd couple team (3.5/5)   February 3, 2008

this is a pretty good movie.it's an action adventure comedy.there is a
lot of action and the movie is fast paced.there isn't a lot of
comedy,but comedy bits there are,are pretty funny.Jackie Chan's
acrobatic, over the top cartoonish martial arts moves are funny.Chris
Tucker's motor mouth character is pretty funny at times.also the
teaming of Chan and Tucker is a great idea.they work well off each
other.one could not be more opposite from the other.i liked their back
and forth banter.the other thing i like about this movie is that even
though there is some violence,it's not excessive, and there is a bit of
coarse language,but not very much.for me,Rush Hour is a 3.5/5

4 out of 5 stars Rush Hour is one of best buddy-cop movies   June 23, 2007
Jenny J.J.I. (That Lives in Carolinas)
I get a kick out of this movie. The way Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker interact and play off each other is so hilarious. Jackie Chan's Hollywood career got a second break with Rush Hour and the plot has more substance than most Jackie Chan movies.

We got James Carter, played by Chris Tucker, who is an LAPD detective with a penchant for dancing Michael Jackson-style while blowing up blocks of buildings. This gets him into trouble with his sergeant who, at the request of the FBI, assigns him to a case where he ends up being a nurse maid to Lee (Chan), a Chinese detective who has just broken up a huge smuggling ring in Hong Kong. The FBI want Carter and Lee to not interfere with the investigation of the kidnapping of the Chinese Consul's daughter, but Lee and Carter do anyway, in their own charismatic manner and triumph where the FBI fail.

The martial arts expertise of Jackie Chan is fantastic and shows that his truly a master in what he does. Chris Tucker does a terrific job of playing the off the wall LAPD officer who trys to keep Chan's character out of the way of an investigation. Chris Tucker is an extremely well disciplined actor, and seems to go very smoothly with the styles of Jackie Chan. Not only is the action part of the movie good, the now common jokes in martial arts movies are all there, including many racial/cultural difference jokes not necessarily making fun of races, but the cultural differences. Rush Hour is nothing to take seriously, but it is fun to watch.

4 out of 5 stars Movie was good... Tucker is a riot!   February 28, 2005
P. J Parrish (Columbus Ohio)
I thought that the movie was good. Jackie Chan was Inspector Lee who gets called in to help find Soo Young a little Chinese Girl. Chris Tucker is Det. Carter who is forced to keep Lee out of the way so that the LAPD can try to take all credit for solving the case. But soon the 2 manage to work their way in to save the little girl.

I thought that this one was much better then the sequel that came after. Chris Tucker had lots of Great one liners! "This is the United States of James Carter now. I'm the president.. I'm the emperior, I'm the king... I'm Michael Jackson you're Tito!"

The way Chan and Tucker play off each other is wonderful. So what if Tucker had problems with speaking Chinese... Jackie Chan still struggles with his english so I don't fault either one...

There is a big docufilm about the movie along with a special game that you can play to help save the little girl... Please watch with an open mind... It is a lot of fun...

3 out of 5 stars Jackie Chan needs to retire   July 19, 2004
Victoria (Honolulu, Hawaii)
This is not bad considering that most of Jackie Chan's movies are pretty much the same. That aside, story wasn't bad and there was some decent action scenes. Chris Tucker, however, does nothing but gets on your nerves with his irritating voice, bad acting and an IQ of a chimpanzee. In the outtakes, they show a scene that requires Chris Tucker to say two words in Chinese and he would blow it every single time. Talk about a dimwit
