| Customer Reviews: Don't (DO) buy this April 24, 2006 Mary E. Ward (chictown) In reply to the author of the above title, I loved your response to the author of the "Don't Buy This" and his spelling errors...He/She also destroyed Dumas name. Might as well have said Alexander Dumbass. I too loved this Richard Chamberlain adaptation, the new one was a total piece of trash..Apparently the screen writers of this one thought their version would be much better than the original author's and would appeal to a much wider audience of persons of a more limited intelligence.
Monte Cristo September 8, 2003 D. Brown (Stone Mountain, GA) Although this version follows the book more closely than the newer version, I felt it lacked the excitement. It was a little too slow for my taste. But again, to all who have read the Count of Monte Cristo, this one is more closely matched to the book.
Will Watch Time and Again August 5, 2003 Michael Sean Geary (Pensacola, FL USA) Several postive aspects: 1) Richard Chamberlain, 2) Alexander Dumas, 3) Everything doesn't always work out in the end
A Story With A Strong Moral Lesson August 2, 2003 Peter Kenney (Birmingham, Alabama, USA) THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO is a film adaptation of the classic story by Alexandre Dumas of three men who conspire to have their common enemy Edmund Dantes sent to prison and the vengeance wreaked by Dantes after his escape many years later. The movie is reasonably faithful to the book. The early part of the film depicts prison life graphically and the mood changes abruptly for the better with the start of the revenge sequence.Richard Chaberlain gives a good performance and is believable as both the younger and older Edmund Dantes. A strong supporting cast includes Kate Nelligan, Louis Jourdan, Donald Pleasance and Tony Curtis. David Greene is known for his direction of GRAY LADY DOWN and THE STRANGE AFFAIR.
Don't (DO) Buy This July 11, 2003 I really detest replying to a viewer who has differing opinions, but this time is a necessary comment. For one thing, the reviewer from Boston said 'kepping', uh, it's keeping! And 'due' should be 'do'. Richard Chamberlain was not 'handed' this film, he chose it. Thank God Richard has a command of the English language, as the reviewer from Boston evidently is one french frie (or is it fry?) short of a Happy Meal. Now, for the film. It's 1980, years past when the book was written and Richard does credence to his part. It's swashbuckling at its best, drama, humor to some degree. Worth the money? You judge! It's one I watch over and over and always find it entertaining which in this day and age is lacking. I don't judge whether the movie follows the book, as Hollyweird takes its liberties, but for plain entertainment, a night behind the popcorn bowl, this movie is well worth the price...
