C.S. Lewis's beloved children's fantasy is as delicate as a Faberge egg, and bringing it to film has tons of inherent risks. Faithfulness is not the problem in this live-action version from WonderWorks, but pacing most certainly is. This realization is poky at times when it should be absolutely riveting, and yet it manages to be diverting during sequences that are primarily set-up or exposition. Four young children travel through an attic wardrobe to the magical land of Narnia. There, the White Witch keeps it "always winter and never Christmas," but her rule is in jeopardy as the fabled lord of the land, a huge lion named Aslan, is rumored to have returned. Sadly, near the end of the film, it's almost possible to hear the production team debating just where to spend its cash. They gave it their all to create the lion Aslan but had to settle for rudimentary animation for many of the truly magical creatures of Narnia. Suffice it to say, it's a nice try. --Keith Simanton

I remember watching this as a child on television. I think it was shown in two parts. I was very happy to find this on DVD(...) This animated version is the best!
The live action version is a little too cheesy with the special effects. Disney is coming out with a NEW live version in the fall (2004). I can't wait!! This series really needs to be done right, and hopefully it can lead others to Christ.

One of my favorite movies ever. I saw it first long ago, and have since worn the tape down. The music is absolutely amazing, and this version of the film has always been relatively unknown. In my experience I've known only a few friends who have seen it. The animation is, to me, exactly as it should be...not outdated...not poorly done...nothing...the whole movie is, and it far surpasses any live action versions I've ever seen, which I've never been able to stomach anyway. Amazing, simply amazing...how much longer do we have to wait for somebody to release it on DVD...?
musically uplifting April 11, 2004
I first saw this version of the film when I was 8 and I have just seen it again yesterday on ITV and I still love it. For the 1970s the animation was good but I think it is the music that really makes this film. It's a beautiful score and it still brings a tear to my eye (mostly due to the music) when Aslan dies and then comes back to life. I hope this version is soon available to buy as my video recorder stopped recording half way through the film yesterday.

Every now and again, maybe, once in a generation, we witness an event so captivating and so memerable that, no matter what, you will always be able to visualise that event fresh in your mind, time after time. This amimated film is, not only in my opinion, but of everyone I know who has seen this film, one of the most underated classic amimations of all time. The story is legendary - the amimation is perfection. The last time I saw the film was almost twenty years ago. Since then, my old Betamax video player has given up the ghost and, sadly, I have not been able to watch it, or show it to my son as it was last aired in the UK back in the 1980's. ITV have, twice attempted to show it on Christmas Eve (2002 and 2003) without it going to broadcast for copyright reasons. I have heard that it is in the schedule for Easter 2004. Whatever you do, if you have got this far into this review, then this film is a life experience that you cannot miss. Unfortunately, this film is not on general release yet, which is a huge injustice to everone who has already seen it and wish to own it. When it is available on DVD, I for sure will be putting in my advance copy without fail, along with my box of Turkish Delights!

Like other reviewers i remember seeing this as a kid and parts of the movie stay vivid with you. ONe of the best absolutely best animated movie of all times. the music is beautiful. yes the animation is outdated but in my opinion this is better then disney movies being made today. and i didn't realize actually it was a religious movie until years later. that doesnt change a thing. i love this movie and could watch it many times. i had the tape,loaned it to a friend and didn't get it back. that wil teach me! recommend this to everyone! this is a movie for young and old.
