From Amazon.com From the very first shot (a tranquil beachside moment rendered hilariously off-kilter), this wholly wonderful film about a turbulent year in the life of two teenage sisters is a stunningly fresh--if somewhat insubstantial--delight. Originating from what one suspects is a largely autobiographical script, director Diane Kurys's debut film rings true on nearly every level (although it is somewhat jarring that a few of the eighth graders on display here appear to be pushing 25). A refreshingly nonidealized, endearingly raunchy film that deserves to be grouped with Truffaut's The 400 Blows and A Christmas Story as one of the best-ever movies about growing up, and an ideal starter film for viewers hesitant about international cinema. In French with English subtitles. --Andrew Wright
