From Amazon.com More is not necessarily better. A glitzy Hollywood cast and a big budget did not improve the wonderful 1957 teleplay (or its equally charming 1964 remake) upon which this version is based. This is partly because Brandy, cast in the title role, cannot act. Not helping matters are Whoopi Goldberg as the prince's mother and Jason Alexander as his valet. Their shtick wears thin very quickly. However, Paolo Montalban is charismatic as the prince, and Whitney Houston plays a fairy godmother with pizzazz. The production cost millions, and is certainly lavish, but the whole affair feels forced and overdone, reminding one of a prom queen wearing too much makeup. It does deserve credit for a multi-ethnic cast, the addition of two new songs and a hip attitude. However, the 1964 version (the original was not taped) is much sweeter and more romantic. Originally released as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Highly recommend for African-American girls November 12, 2007 C. WADDLES (los angeles) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My 4-year old daughter LOVES this movie. We've yet to have the racial discussion, but she recognizes that this beautiful princess she adores is "brown." She makes a definite distinction between Cinderella with the yellow hair and Cinderella with the braids like mine. This multi cultural cast seems to break all the traditional rules that a family has to actually LOOK alike. I am proud when I watch these diverse images and happy that my daughter can experience that someone who looks like her can be a beautiful Princess without ever bringing up the fact that someone who looks like her can be a beautiful Princess. It just is.
Sweet Brandy February 3, 2007 N. Payne (Mount Forest, Ontario Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie version is fantastic. Brandy is very sweet as Cinderella. I can't believe she was only eighteen years old when the movie was made. I don't think this movie received enough accolades. More musical shows should be cast colour-diversified. I love Jason Alexander and of course, Bernadette Peters! Even Whitney Houston who often annoys me was terrific. And imagine a prince who is handsome, can sing, and can dance! This is a super movie for anyone in the family!
Not perfect, but nothing is... August 30, 2004 MLE (London, Canada) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found this movie delightful - I think I caught it on TV the first time I saw it. I sat through all the commercial breaks to watch the whole thing and that's saying something. I love how eclectic the cast is. It's refreshing to see a completely multicultural cast as well. The Queen and King were wonderfully played. The stepmother was perfectly cruel. The stepsisters were laughably brainless. The prince never seems to get enough credit in any of the reviews I've seen - he sings quite well; I thought he was a pretty good actor and he meshes well with his "parents". The songs are mostly well performed (I'm not sure what kind of crack the fairy godmother was smoking though). All in all, it's worth picking up and adding to your DVD collection.
We loved this version of Cinderella. December 19, 2003 Wendy R. Cideciyan (Rueschlikon, Switzerland) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For my kids this Cinderella is five stars. For both my 2 1/2 and 5 year old this is their favorte movie. My younger one sings her heart out with the video. It is the only video she wants to see at the moment. We are a multi racial-cultural family bought together thru living in various countries and adoption. As parents we enjoyed livly humor, the casting and the colorful art nouveau sets.
The Best of All October 24, 2003 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have seen the 1964 version and then I watched this one. I have to say this by far is the best. The voices of the singers in the 1964 movie, such as Leslie Ann Warren's, are so nasal it's disgusting. This movie has more chemistry and the singers are better.
