Contre toute attente, Mansfield Park, inspire d'un roman de Jane Austen, est bel et bien un film de Patricia Rozema. En prenant de grandes libertes avec l'histoire originale, la realisatrice de When Night Is Falling a su concilier deux univers a priori opposes : celui de la celebre romanciere britannique du debut du XIXe siecle et le sien, contemporain, urbain et nord-americain. Elevee par un oncle (Harold Pinter) ayant fait fortune grace a l'esclavagisme, Fanny (Frances O'Connor) vit a Mansfield Park. Ni servante ni aristocrate, la jeune fille cherche sa place entre un cousin violent (James Purefoy) et un autre (Johnny Lee Miller), secretement amoureux d'elle. L'arrivee d'un frere et d'une sœur intrigants (Allessandro Nivola et Embeth Davidtz) et les chasses-croises amoureux qui s'ensuivent bouleverseront le fragile equilibre de ce petit monde sur le declin. On retrouve dans ce film les memes jeux de pouvoir et de seduction que dans Sense and Sensibility, les memes tiraillements entre la raison et la passion que dans Persuasion, mais la cineaste torontoise y a imprime son humour, parfois mordant, parfois complice, une sensualite tres fine et une assurance nouvelle. Si le rythme aurait pu etre plus rapide, Mansfield Park reste un delicieux film d'auteur et d'epoque. --Eric Fourlanty

i think it's far too easy to get hung up on whether or not a film was "faithful" to the book it was based on. admittedly, many fans may end up disappointed that certain elements they expected were absent or changed, but the fact that film and the written text are such different media requires that, often, a novel will necessarily have to undergo alterations in order to work in the filmic medium. and that's ok, so long as we recognise that the film, whatever adaptation of whatever book it may be - in this case, mansfield park - is an entirely separate thing from austen's text, and treat it as such.
personally, i've always liked this film, if not as a "faithful" adaptation of a novel, then at least as a wonderful piece of postcolonial filmmaking.

I read the novel years before I saw the film, and I have to say, I prefer the film version. The differences don't bother me in the least. I love what Rozema did with the adaptation. this is my favourite big screen Austen adaptatin (the PP miniseries is my overall favourite). the final speech that Edmund (johnny lee miller) gives Fanny is just beautiful and heart pounding.

I, too, am a big Jane Austin fan and read the novel before watching the film. There are inaccuracies (Fanny's older brother, William, is completely left out), but if you are looking for an enjoyable period romance with good acting, you will likely appreciate this adaptation. It certainly is easier to like Fanny in this film than it is in the book. She's much more empowered.

This movie is really good.
I understand people being unsatisfied if they have read the novel, (which I have not), but it is so well done as a movie on its own, that I would buy it and recommend it any day to a girl with a love for a good romance & appreciation for Jane Austen style movies.Loved the filming... beautiful shots, lovely acting,
You'll appreciate the cinematography for sure. Overall, one of the best romances I've seen in my life.

Though I haven't read that book and do not have the qualms the other commenters here have in regards to the accuracy, when I saw this movie I was floored. The acting is excellent, and the filming breath-taking. The cinematography is beautiful. The way a simple expression of Fanny Price is captured pulls you into all the emotions she's feeling in her position as a poor cousin in her wealthy uncle's family's house. I thought it was a great movie... definitely a great movie to own and watch multiple times... if you like a good romance with substance to the story. I am such a fan... one of my favourite romance movies. Goes down in my top 10.
