Amazon.com Essential Video You don't need to know anything about hockey to be moved by this hourlong documentary about one of the greatest upsets in sports history: the United States' defeat of the vaunted Russian Olympic hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The film recounts the David vs. Goliath matchup between the Americans (essentially a group of college kids molded into a team by coach Herb Brooks, also the U.S. hockey coach in the 2002 Olympic games) and the Russians, professionals who had won four straight Olympic golds. The story is retold in interviews with the people who lived it, including Brooks and several of the American players, sportscaster Al Michaels (who uttered the title line as the game ended), and key Russian players. Do You Believe in Miracles? is a solid blend of sports and history that focuses on the human element in one of the great underdog victories of all time. --Marshall Fine

Come on, who are we kidding? At that time, 2 gold medals in hockey by the US, played where? In the US... oh.. I see... The wonders money can do. They ran out of luck in 2002, where things got back to where they should be. I only wish one thing: that there could be a 0 star... I'd give it to this thing...
IF YOU'RE AMERICAN YOU WILL LIKE IT July 4, 2004 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great program, about a great moment in sports history. If you are interested in the event, buy the video. I think far too much of the program is dedicated to late 1970's politics, but hey. We won the hockey match, right? Consider this, however: What do you think would have happened if the officials interrupted our players while they were hugging each other like schoolgirls who found out the quarterback thought they were cute. What if he told them, told the U.S. coach, that there had been some sort of fundamental mistake in the way the match had been run (e.g., wrong dimensions for the ice, for the rink, whatever), and that they would have to play again? RIGHT THEN? NOT tomorrow (the next day)? "Okay. Now we play again"? No, not like the 1972 Olympic basketball gold medal game. In that case the referees put something like 3 seconds on the clock. No, I mean what if our pimple-popping players suddenly had to swallow the fact that they had gotten remarkably lucky and play again? I believe they would have threatened to sue... That is, they would have whined, cried, complained, then would have lost. Badly.
A great victory in a very dark time of the world April 13, 2004 Golden Lion (North Ogden, Ut United States) I remember back in 1980 watching the Americans beat the Russian Olympic Hockey team, at Lake Placid. At the time, I didn't realize the Russion intimidation factor nor did I realize what an upset the American victory represented to the Russians. The American were an amateur hockey team and the Russians were a professional hockey team with some of the worlds best players. I remember being impressed by the American Hockey team as they passed puck with fluidiness and team coordination and the creative of the patterns. The American seems very good and did not seek like an under dog team even though the average age was 21. The legs beat the wolf. I felt great after the American's won, stood up and cheered, and thought about the game all day.
A Great Sports Documentary!!! March 12, 2004 David C. Ronemus (Nazareth, PA USA) After seeing the movie Miracle, I bought this DVD from amazon.com, and have watched it several times. It really is a great piece, with some nice camera work and instant replays. The interviews and segments with the Russian team and people's reactions were also very interesting. A bargain for a wonderful piece of sports history. Yes, i believe in miracles.
Okay, already! March 3, 2004 Aaron (Davis, CA USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I remember seeing this U!S!A! victory live on TV: "Do you believe in miracles!!!" Yeah, yeah. My friends and I couldn't wait for the ending, so we could play Missile Command on Atari 2600. The Olympic game itself was a yawn for this kid, as I played hockey. I didn't need to watch the game, I lived it. To see the Russkies defeated, try the DVD Thirteen Days, and Reagan and Walesa biographies. Really, study any Cold War President, except Carter... who, okay, cross-checked those Soviets on human rights issues. If sports is *really* a metaphor for war (but with better beer commercials, massages, hot tubs, hype announcers, and referees), why not study the real thing? Time to grow up, people!
