Exactly What It Says It Is! Great Video! November 24, 2003 Cynthia Nebeker (Idaho ~ USA) This video is just what it says it is. It's a Sing-Along. It has the songs from the Jonah movie. My kids think its great and love singing along. If you are looking for a storyline, don't buy a sing-along. This is an entertaining video for children. My 5 and 7 year olds still really enjoy it.
Great for your 6-12 year old that still loves her veggies! August 22, 2003 LeeAnn Balbirona (Washington state) This is a sing-along video featuring songs from the Jonah movie, Lyle the Kindly Viking and the short of the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything. The thin little thread of story that links all these songs together is that Archibald Asparagus (who plays Jonah) is afraid to begin shooting the Jonah movie because he is afraid of being swallowed by a whale. But, it's a sing-along tape, not a regular story, so give them a break! The songs are fun and my 6-year-old loves to read the words and follow along with the clever lyrics. There is a live concert style video of the Newsboys singing "The Belly of the Whale" which is really fun. I found out later that Steve Taylor wrote the lyrics for this song, which explains the cleverness and boppy rasta beat. There's also a fun live video of "Billy Joe McGuffey (was a really clumsy kid...)" which you'll never get your kids to stop singing. My three-year-old likes that one. Hee hee. My 6yo told me she thought the lead singer for the Newsboys looks like the bald designer guy from Surprised by Design! A fun addition to your Veggies collection to watch when you just wanna sing and dance!
One Long Commercial March 10, 2003 Marjorie B. Osterhout (Pacific Northwest) This video is nothing but a long commercial for the movie. A long chunk of it isn't even VeggieTales -- it's footage of a real band with kids singing. The interaction between Bob and Larry wasn't the usual witty banter, and there was absolutely no story -- just songs. My 3-year old was bored -- we watched it once and gave it away.
Just a filler March 2, 2003 Anna Klein (Maine, USA) After watching this short video, I find it obvious VeggieTales put this out merely as a filler for people to buy until their actual Jonah movie (VeggieTales first full movie ever, in fact) came out in theaters. While this tape has some good songs on it, most noteably the Newsboy's "Belly of a Whale" which features the Newsboys in concert and is fun for older kids to watch, the storyline is nonexistant, the morals cheap, and the entertainment value nil. Having never found VeggieTales' message that great to begin with (I strongly dislike the way they cheapen and distort Biblical stories), I'd put this one at the bottom of the heap.In all fairness, I must say my 5- and 7-year-old little "brothers" seemed to find it interesting enough, at least the first couple times. There are some funny jokes -- funny at least if you've watched all the videos in the series up until now, and there's some terrific behind the scenes glimpses of the actors taping their voices for use with the animated characters. Absolutely hilarious. Still, after a couple of watchings this is a shelver. Better to just wait for the movie (which is out now!).
not what you think... November 2, 2002 I was so utterly disappointed with this video. I was expecting a Veggie Tales cartoon, and what I got was a Christian rock video for children. Half of the tape is not even Veggie Tales. I feel like they have compromised their values and standards in order to appeal better to the box office audience. What a shame...it would have been nice to KNOW you are getting the wholesome product they began with. I hope its not a sign of things to come.
